Aawaaj celebrates the result of 10 years of mobilization with the approval of the law against domestic violence in Nepal

Bice's partner organization has been actively involved in lobbying for the last 5 years with national and grassroots NGO allies.

In partnership with various organizations, Aawaaj initiated various actions including signature campaigns, regional and national hunger strikes and mass rallies at district levels to promote the domestic violence bill. Additionally, at a national level, Aawaaj sent a delegation to meet with the nation's Prime minister and president, presenting to both an Aawaaj publication drawing their attention to the problems of domestic violence. In 2008, "Aawaaj Koseli", a domestic violence booklet, was published. The sponsoring organization mobilized grassroots community groups, community based organizations to lobby the government at the district level, Midwestern regional level and national level.

The domestic violence act, passed on April 27th 2009, encourages female victims of domestic violence to take legal action against their perpetrators. Before the act, victims felt a need to be silent about domestic violence; however, this positive legislature further clarifies the need for the implementation of new domestic violence laws. The Domestic violence bill passed thanks to the continuous efforts of all NGOs for the last 10 years.

The lobbyng of Aawaaj
The bill, passed largely through the mobilization and initiation of women activist, marks a monumental achievement for all women movements, including Aawaaj, as both worked to inspire and mobilize networks, allies and groups at a grassroots level. This year, while preparing a national shadow report of CEDAW, Aawaaj was recognized for its special contribution to the prevention of violence against women and efforts to pass the domestic violence bill. Aawaaj currently serves as secretary of the Women's Human Rights Defender Network at the district level and hosts the organization's meetings. Aawaaj is as well an active member of the National Women's Security Pressure Group (serving as a beyond Beijing committee member), the District Alliance Gender Group, the Women's Human Rights Defender Network and the National Network Against Trafficking Alliance.
